TECHNICAL ENGLISH FOR MECHANICAL ENGINEERING 1
Olinka Breka, Snježana Kereković, Božena Tokić
Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb
The first coursebook in a two-book series, designed for students of mechanical engineering, comprises four units, Engineering, Energy, Engineering design and Computers in mechanical engineering. Each unit includes authentic and up-to-date texts that are accompanied by a variety of tasks ranging from exercises to develop the skills of reading and comprehension of technical texts as well as the skills of speaking and writing. These language skills will enable students to become competent speakers of the English language both during their studies and in their future professional life. Therefore, a special emphasis is placed on building and expanding students’ technical vocabulary and developing the skills of argumentation, reporting and presenting. The coursebook has also a valuable grammar reference section, a skills bank which covers topics relevant to the area of engineering (reading numbers and mathematical expressions, describing trends presented in graphs, defining, classifying, describing a technical process), an appendix with typical foreign plurals used in engineering, technical collocations and abbreviations as well as a comprehensive word list.
