At the Council of Europe’s initiative, the European Day of Languages has been celebrated every year since 2001 on 26 September – together with the European Commission.
As part of various activities, the Council of Europe has launched a special website in 40 languages, which draws special attention to the importance of knowing and learning foreign languages. With various activities and curiosities, it is pointed out that there have never been more opportunities to work or study in another European country – but the lack of language competence prevents many people from taking advantage of these benefits.
Through its activities and work, The Association of LSP Teachers at Higher Education Institutions wants to point out the importance of language learning at every age, especially within higher education institutions.
Knowledge of a foreign language of the profession (language for specific purpose) not only allows for ease of communication in a business environment, but also greatly contributes to an understanding of business culture, which is key to business success. Linguistic diversity is part of globalization, and multilingualism has a key role to play in increasing employability, mobility, and increasing the competitiveness of both the Croatian and EU economies.
