English in Naval Architecture
Daniela Matić, PhD, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Split
The English in Naval Architecture coursebook is intended for the undergraduate first-year students majoring in naval architecture and enrolled in English language 1 and English language 2 courses, but it can also be used by students majoring in other related engineering studies.
The coursebook consists of eight modules, each covering two language topics and exercises. The texts on naval architecture draw on scientific and professional articles from various sources – historical and professional books and journals, encyclopaedic articles, dictionaries and internet articles from various shipyards. The texts were abridged and adapted in order to fit the course requirements and students’ knowledge on naval architecture at the very beginning of their studies. Comprehension check exercises, naval architecture terminology exercises, language work and grammar exercises are based on module text content. Both texts and exercises were selected and composed according to the CEFR B2 level of the English language proficiency that students are expected to have achieved upon finishing their secondary education. At the end of each module there are exercises aimed at stimulating students to do research on some module topic and gather information in order to write a description of an activity or a process, or to draw up a report or an essay. For this purpose, in the Appendices section students can find practical tips on how to describe, report, deliver a presentation, summarize a text and how to write curriculum vitae and a business letter, the skills which can all be very useful in their future professional life. This section is followed by the Glossary of naval architecture terms and their Croatian equivalents which students can use while doing various language exercises.
